Intel renames its CPUs.
June 19th, 2009
Intel has admitted that its current CPU naming convention is very confusing so it intends to simplify things.
The current ‘Core 2 Duo’ and ‘Core 2 Quad’ names will be removed as the chips reach their natural end-of-life.
New chips will be called i3, i5 or i7, indicating entry-level, mid-range, and top-end.
However, Celeron, Pentium and Centrino will remain along with Atom and both naming conventions will run concurrently for at least two years.
That’s cleared that up then.
