Windows 7 is the latest Microsoft Operating System, superceding Vista – the disastrous OS foisted on the public less than 3 years ago.
Cynics have dubbed Windows 7 “Vista that works” and that pretty much rings true, though having used Windows 7 for 6 months or more now in its various development phases it certainly does work.
Unlike Vista, which I avoided using, I’m happily using Windows 7 on a daily basis – it is faster, better designed and just feels much better than Vista, and there have been virtually no teething problems.
Windows 7 will be released on October 22nd, ahead of the original expected release date, due to the general acclaim it has received.
So, why should you buy it?
Well, if you are running Vista, it is simply a much better product, I wouldn’t hesitate to upgrade as soon as possible.
If you are running XP, the situation is less cut-and-dried – although I’ve got used to using W7 as my default OS now, I wouldn’t necessarily be running out to get W7 immediately.
In time as you replace your PC or laptop, it will be a natural replacement – this is especially true for businesses with lots of computers – if they are happily running XP there is no necessity to spend a lot of money on upgrading their OS as soon as W7 is out – XP will still get security updates from Microsoft until 2014, by which time we’ll probably be on Windows 9 or 10!

How much will it cost?

Prices haven’t been announced yet – although it is likely that if you buy a new computer running Vista from July onwards you will be entitled to a free upgrade, that there will be a discounted price for those people already running Vista, and that if you live in Europe or the UK you will pay a lot more than if you live in the U.S.A.

If you have computer equipment you’re looking to get rid of, please run it past me first, but if it’s of no use you can now take it to Computer House in Parikia, where they will store it until it can be sent to the mainland for recycling.

As part of a restructuring plan taking place at OTE, broadband (DSL) users with an OTENET contract will soon be switched to OTE’s other DSL supplier, Conn-x.
If you are a broadband user, there is no need to do anything. OTE will call you sometime in the next few months to inform you that you are about to be switched over.
There should be minimal interruption to your service, a few hours down-time at most. The only thing you will notice is that instead of getting a separate bill each month from OTENET, your Conn-x service charge will appear on your OTE telephone bill every two months.
Your tariff will remain the same.
If you have an eye for a bargain, however, you can pop down now to Germanos in Parikia, take out a contract with Conn-x, and get a goody bag including a webcam, 4Gb USB stick, router, and Panda anti-virus. All for €30 – including the first two months’ internet charges.
You then pay €16 per month for a 1Mbps connection, minimum six month contract.

The 3G alternative to OTE

If you have no landline or live in an area where DSL isn’t available, there is a good chance that you will be able to get fast access via a 3G modem.
3G is a technology that allows fast transfer of data via your mobile phone or, in this case, a modem, which simply plugs into a USB slot on your laptop or PC.
Typical speeds on Paros range from 384Kbps to 1.8Mbps.
There is wide coverage on Paros now, although you will have to check yourself if the reception is good enough where you live or stay. You can do this either with a mobile phone that supports 3G – many newer phones do – or you can borrow a modem from Germanos and give it a test run.
The cost? Well it’s €32 per month with a 5Gb limit* – this is enough for most people to run an office, listen to the radio, use Skype etc. A 30Gb limit* will cost you €51.50 per month.
There is a twelve month minimum contract but there is a neat provision for people who spend only a part of the year here. You can downgrade your account when you are away to a basic €5 per month (which will keep your account active) and simply upgrade it when you return.
So, if you spend six months here each year, you would pay €30 to keep your account active whilst you are away.

* You MUST NOT exceed your monthly limit. If you do, even by a small amount, the charges are staggering.
As a special offer you can get the 30Gb at the 5Gb price until September 30th, at which time you can downgrade if you wish.
——————————————————————————————————————————
For any further queries regarding the above services contact Pablos or Stellios at Germanos on 22840-28070.
